The challenge

WCB Nova Scotia’s digital presence spanned more than 12 disconnected websites and 2,200 pages on an end-of-life platform. Inconsistent navigation, duplicated content, limited mobile access, and unclear information made it difficult for workers, employers, and service providers to complete essential tasks.

What we did

Code for Canada partnered with WCB to design and deliver a unified, user-centred website. Through research, prototyping, usability testing, and biweekly agile delivery, the team:

  • Consolidated WCB’s digital services into a fit for purpose platform that they could control directly
  • Reorganized content around user journeys based on real world user research
  • Improved employer registration and self-service flows
  • Created a searchable, taxonomy-based resource library
  • Built to WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards
  • Developed WCB’s internal capacity in agile delivery and user-centred design

Homepage redesigned around validated user journeys

The result

The redesigned site launched in October 2025, replacing a fragmented legacy ecosystem with a modern, accessible one-stop shop. Alongside the new platform, WCB gained the tools, practices, and team capabilities needed to keep researching, improving, and evolving its digital services.

At a glance: 12+ sites consolidated · 2,200+ legacy pages addressed · 189 new content pages · WCAG 2.2 AA compliant
