Canada Needs Digital Public Infrastructure
We're building the shared digital systems that will make Canada a strong, sovereign nation.
It's time to build modern infrastructure
Infrastructure is the backbone of nation-building. In the past, railroads secured Canada’s sovereignty by moving goods and people across our country. Prime Minister Carney has made it clear that the time has come to build again. Today, however, physical infrastructure is not enough.
Canada needs Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) — the shared digital systems that allow governments, businesses and people to interact seamlessly and securely across the country. Code for Canada is already building and implementing DPI. We believe now is the time to invest in the infrastructure our country needs to succeed in a digital world.
Without DPI:
Workers are stranded
Without portable digital credentials, Canadian residents struggle to work across regional borders, limiting labour mobility and economic growth at a critical moment.
Regions are isolated
Provinces and territories have built incompatible digital IDs and ways of managing sensitive data, creating costly silos and missed opportunities for collaboration and economic gains.
Canada loses billions
While other nations like Estonia, Denmark, and Ukraine race ahead with national DPI, Canada loses billions in GDP annually to fragmented systems.
We're building DPI across Canada
Code for Canada is already building the digital solutions that will close Canada's DPI gap. These platforms are working for governments across the country — helping residents access housing, coordinating essential services, and unlocking economic value.
Kiujuk
Coordinating critical services
Municipalities often rely on poorly coordinated systems to deliver essential services like sewage removal, leaving residents uncertain and operations overstretched. Code for Canada's Kiujuk app streamlines the process, managing service delivery while providing leaders with data for planning and advocacy. It's currently being tested in Northern Quebec.
HomeHub
Helping residents access housing
Finding affordable housing in Canada often means navigating hundreds of separate waitlists and scattered information managed by different providers. HomeHub brings it all together — a digital platform that makes it simple for residents to find and apply for affordable housing, while giving providers the tools to manage listings and applications efficiently. It's currently in development for use in BC.
Let's build a stronger Canada
Digital Public Infrastructure isn't built by one organization alone. Code for Canada is bringing together people and organizations committed to building the shared digital systems Canada needs to thrive.
This is a generational moment. Whether you're ready to implement a solution, contribute your expertise, or support this critical work, we're building this together.
