Ontario's Grey County wanted to understand how to ethically use AI to improve resident services

At Code for Canada, we believe that AI, like all technologies, can be a helpful tool when used correctly. In 2024, we put that belief to the test, working with public sector partners to explore how this new technology can be used responsibly for the public good.

We helped Grey County staff explore how AI could improve the design and delivery of their services. We led cross-departmental workshops with County staff to give them a strong understanding of the potential and the pitfalls of using AI to deliver services.

We walked staff through a primer on current AI technologies and led brainstorming sessions on how they could be applied to improve public services, like helping teams reduce their backlogs or review and triage information. We used our unique Options Analysis framework to better understand which AI tools might best serve the County’s needs.

The workshops gave staff a strong understanding of the current technologies on the market and a framework for assessing their needs and determining a possible path forward.

We’re excited to explore more partnerships around the responsible use of AI in the new year.
